Smithville is perhaps best known as the home of “Hope Floats,” the 1998 movie starring Sandra Bullock, Harry Connick, Jr. and Gena Rowlands. It was also the location for “Tree of Life,” starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, filmed in 2008. But Smithville is much more than “Hope Floats”. Friendly people, a “can do” attitude, community pride and hundreds of things to do attracts visitors daily to Smithville, as well as the Hollywood movie industry. Your first stop should be the Smithville Area Chamber of Commerce at Main and First Street. They have more than enough pamphlets and information for you to use to explore Smithville. It is surprising that so many residents continue to praise and celebrate the town and not keeping it a secret as long as they can! The potential exists that those from Austin, San Antonio, Houston, and even nearby Bastrop will invade this almost perfect small town. Bicyclists love Smithville’s natural features. Ride through the oak-lined street of town or the beautifully wooded, winding roads of Buescher State Park. The Colorado River, which runs through Smithville, is a popular destination for fishermen and kayakers. Smithville has 206 properties listed in the National Historic Register, a historic downtown area and a small town environment. Visit Smithville and don’t forget to take your picture with Smitty, the record-breaking gingerbread man. Special Thanks to: Stefani O’Donald, Adena Lewis, Tina Smith, David L. Herrington, and the Smithville Chamber of Commerce.
